children in Nigeria are at risk
All seven of the most common neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are found in Nigeria. With an estimated 100 million people at risk for at least one NTD, Nigeria has the highest NTD burden in Africa.
In 2013, Nigeria’s Ministry of Health launched a five year plan to integrate Nigeria’s NTD interventions and control or eliminate the seven most common NTDs by 2020. The country has already reached 96 percent of communities with onchocerciasis treatment and has been certified free of guinea worm.
In many areas, poor sanitation, inadequate clean water and limited or no access to quality, affordable health services mean many people continue to suffer from NTDs such as lymphatic filariasis (LF), schistosomiasis and intestinal worms.

Your donation's
impact
END7 donations totaling approximately $84,000 helped scale up Nigeria’s national NTD efforts by supporting the distribution of NTD medicine to 740,000 individuals, including 9,000 school children who were treated for schistosomiasis and intestinal worms for the first time. The mass drug administration took place within three Local Government Areas in Bauchi State and treated community members for all of the most common NTDs — onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, intestinal worms and schistosomiasis. This mass drug administration was completed in August 2014.
By partnering with MITOSATH, a nonprofit organization in Nigeria, END7 funds also supported the training of more than 2,500 school teachers, community drug distributors and health facility staff members. In addition, END7 funds supported efforts to increase awareness among community members about NTDs.
Partners
The Mission to Save the Helpless (MITOSATH) will carry out the MDA in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health, the Bauchi State Ministry of Health and The END Fund.
The
work continues
In 2014, Nigeria was certified as guinea worm free, and the government continues to make NTDs a priority. Further success will require increased and sustained support from the government and partners.
Supporting a comprehensive NTD initiative in Nigeria will reduce malnutrition, prevent disability and social stigmatization, and increase productivity. With improved cost-effective programming, millions of Nigerians at risk for NTDs can escape these diseases of poverty and their devastating effects by 2020.
